I hadn’t realized that Winston Churchill had had such a privileged upbringing and that Blenheim Palace had been his home. Only a 15 minute drive from Oxford the Palace is a wonderful visit not only for the building and historic displays, but for those wanting a picnic or to walk in the beautiful gardens designed by Capability Brown

Close to the Palace are formal gardens with topiary and cottage plantings, but with over 2,000 acres there are rolling green fields with massive trees creating a wonderful park. You can buy passes if you live locally and want to visit often .

Inside you can either take a tour, or go independently which is what we chose to do, through the gilded State Rooms, with collections of porcelain, glassware, paintings, furniture etc  and the visitor experience…… “Blenheim Palace: The Untold Story”. The Churchill Exhibition includes the room where Sir Winston Churchill was born in 1874. We found the descriptions and information on Churchill written on plaques on the walls and his family very interesting.

It is amazing to think this was a family home – great for hide and seek!

It is a wedding venue so lovely for indoor outdoor wedding functions. Although I understand the actual wedding ceremony in the UK must be indoors by law.

We wandered through the gardens and the fields with wild flowers down near the river to have a picnic in a sheltered spot away from the wind.
